MS Weekly Staff Memo – April 25, 2014

What’s On My Mind…
Take a moment to ponder this famous statement from Gandhi – “The end is inherent in the means.”  This seems to be a recurring theme in my life lately.  I was recently talking to a teacher who shared concerns she has about a few kids not passing the EOG’s despite her best efforts.  Basically, she was trying to determine what else she could do to help them.  After thinking about her MULTIPLE approaches to a student-centered EOG prep experience, I came up dry on further suggestions.  This led me back to my theme…the end is inherent in the means.  Sometimes we just need to remember that we are doing everything humanly possible, and as long as we continue to greet each new day as 1,440 minutes of brand new possibility where anything could happen, then that’s all we can do.  If we continue to believe that every child CAN and WILL learn regardless of what a single standardized test score may say, then that’s all we can do.  And if we continue to keep faith that the result of our labors will be grounded in the pure intentions and GOODNESS with which we acted over the course of the entire year, then that’s all we can do.  So continue to work hard!  Envision your students experiencing success.  Rest. Play.  Keep it light.  And most importantly, be gentle with yourself.  At the end of the day, that’s all we can do.  The end will be inherent in the means, maybe not immediately, but ultimately.  I’m sure of it.

Please be mindful of propping doors open at school.  This is something we not only want to watch as adults, but that we also want to teach the kids.  Not only is it a potential safety hazard, it also is a huge drain on our energy (and expensive $$$).  As I tell my son at home, we really don’t want to air condition the neighborhood. 🙂  When you see a door propped open, please shut it.  Thank you for helping to build this important habit.

With this Classroom Management theme, I think we are on to something!  I have received SO much positive feedback about our last staff meeting that I have decided to ride this wave for a while.  Several of you have expressed interest in pursuing a summer PD Focus group that would dig into reading about and discussing Classroom Management techniques and expectations of overall student behavior.  Of course, this would not be complete without a “side study” focused on pre-adolescent development (ages 11-14).  We would aim to conduct our discussion sessions on Thursdays at school when childcare is provided.  If you are interested in participating or learning more about this possible opportunity, please sign up by clicking here:

Thank you to Laura Collander for passing this along!  “It happens because I leap.”  LOVE THAT!!!
